Today I’m doing a little Q&A. I got an email recently from someone who is interested in our upcoming Undercover Musician series. He said that he’s getting ready to launch his artist website for the first time (congrats!) and he wanted to know where to start.
That’s a great question. Sometimes taking that first step into something new can be the hardest thing to do. Anyway, I’m going to give a couple of tips to anyone who’s wondering how to even get started with launching out on your own.
First of all, a quick disclaimer. This isn’t a technical, step-by-step, how-to post. There’s tons of free information all over the web about the technical side of designing a webpage, how to code with HTML, and so on. In fact, whatever hosting platform you’re using probably has some good tutorials. What I’m going to focus on is more of the why behind the how.
To some, the why might not seem important, but it is. It’s highly connected to the technical aspects of your website and will affect its effectiveness in the long run.
So let’s dive in! I’m going to start by asking a question:
1. How do you see yourself?
This is vitally important. Your website and online brand should reflect you. For example, I’m a musician; so my newest song or album is always front and center on my site. I don’t want people to have to click around for a while to figure out that I’m a musician! Also, I see myself as a very bubbly, fun, charismatic person, and I want people to get that vibe when they come to my site. Lots of colors, lots of pictures of me smiling – you get the idea. If you’ve got a steampunk or goth band, then your website colors, the font, the overall vibe on your website should reflect that.
2. Functionality is key
What do you want people to do on your website? Read your blog? Buy your songs? Donate to your crowdfunding campaign? Like I said in the first point, you don’t want to make people click through five or six links or pages on your site before they figure out who you are and what you do. Don’t be afraid to sell yourself on your own website! Make it easy for people to support you and connect with you.
